As I mentioned on the first page, the
convention reports do contain spoilers for Season 9 of Stargate SG-1.
So, if you don’t want to know, don’t read them and stick to looking at the
photos!
Brent Spiner (Data)
This is the 2nd time I've seen Brent Spiner,
the first being last June at TulsaTrek. Both times,
he was absolutely hilarious and very friendly. I'd heard he had an
"attitude." Apparently he has changed, if that was so. Because he
couldn't have been nicer. He is very sarcastic and witty. I could
see how some people could take it the wrong way, especially if he wasn't being
super nice about it. He did absolutely wonderful impressions of Patrick
Stewart. Someone asked him what we in Orlando should ask Patrick Stewart when
he comes to town at the next Vulkon (scheduled for November). He thought a
moment and then said "Ask him to do his impression of Brent
Spiner"!!! I think that Brent resembles Anthony Geary quite a lot these
days. Which is ironic considering that he worked with Genie Francis' husband,
Jonathan Frakes!
Alas, this is another panel that I didn’t
really take notes during – I occupied my time taking photos. I do know that
Spiner seems pretty sure that there won’t be any more Star Trek
movies, at least any time in the near future. He said that the last one really
didn’t perform all that well. He also said that, yes, Data was dead.
Someone complimented him on his
appearance(s) on Enterprise and he talked some about that and
seemed enthused.
Maryann, DJ and I were all kind of bemoaning
the fact that our tickets included two free autographs from
Spiner and only one from Michael Shanks. (Several people from the convention
staff told me that actually a number of conventiongoers had said the same thing
to them – that they wished they could have two autographs from Michael.) Nothing
against Spiner, we were all just there more to see Michael and we
had all gotten Spiner's autograph at TulsaTrek last June when he and Michael
both appeared there. Between me and Leah, that left us with four
free Spiner autographs and we were trying to find some things to have him sign
around the house so we wouldn't have to spend more money on extra photos. I had
a Data action figure to be signed, so there was one. Leah reminded me I had a
framed Jean Kluge print of a fantasy Data that was gorgeous. So we took that
and that made two. I decided to just go ahead and print out another copy of
Leah's Data cartoon and have him sign it again but this time with Leah present,
since she hadn’t been able to make it to Tulsa with me last year. So that made
three. And then I decided to pull up the few photos I took of him at TulsaTrek
and see if one could be made into an 8x10. I found one and printed it out. So
that made four.
I gave Maryann another print of the Data
cartoon to have signed because the red Somali who played Spot and is in the
cartoon looks just like Nicholas, the Somali she adopted from us. And I asked
DJ and Maryann if they would like copies of my Spiner photograph to have him
sign. They said "yes" so I made copies for them.

Maryann and DJ were both in line ahead of
us. When I got up there, first Brent recognized the Jean Kluge print. I think
he might own the original. He asked me if she was still around and doing
artwork. We usually see her at MediaWest most years, so we chatted with him
about that. He said lovely things about her work. Then I handed him my photo
and he stared at it and suddenly said "What is it about this
photo that's making it so popular all of a sudden?!?!" Then he looked up
and said "Who's selling this?" (He wasn't angry; just curious.) I
realized that he'd just seen the photo from DJ and Maryann ahead of us and
started to laugh. I explained that I was the photographer and I'd given copies
of it to my friends in line ahead of me. He laughed, too, and said "Isn't
that Tulsa?" Next while he was signing Leah's cartoon, our longtime friend
Michelle was one of the people working for the convention with him and she
pointed at Leah and said "That's the artist." He said "Really?!
Let me have it back, then." He took it back from her and wrote a nice
little message to her on it, saying "I have to write something on it for
you, then." This was really nice of him to do since they don't ordinarily
allow personalizations at Vulkon and the Trek actors are usually very strict
about that -- their lines for autographs are usually really long, so it's
understandable.
Michael Shanks did the same thing, by the
way. He didn't do it on all of the cartoons, but he wrote a little message on a
few of them for Leah, which I thought was really nice. I also had the new
role-playing gaming book that has Daniel on the front of it for him to sign and
he looked absolutely stunned when he saw it and how gorgeous it looks.
I know that when I had the one with Apophis on it in Burbank last summer, Peter
Williams kept trying to steal it from me. This is Brent Spiner’s section so I
won’t post any of those cartoons here … but I’ll post one of them on Page 3!
Oh, there are a couple of photos below that
obviously aren’t Brent Spiner. I just thought they were cute photos of a
convention attendee who was watching Brent off to one side. Check them out. ;-)

The Banquet & the OS Breakfast
As I mentioned on Page 1, we were privileged
to have dinner with Gary at the banquet Saturday night and you’ll find some commentary
about what was discussed there along with photos of a surprise guest (Michael
Shanks!) here. Alas, we didn’t get any photos of Gary at the banquet since we
didn’t want to take pictures while all of us were eating and relaxing and
talking … and then Gary had to duck out right after dinner to do a live radio
show with Dean Haglund! So, oddly enough, even though we ate dinner with Gary …
most of the photos below are of … Michael Shanks! Go figure.
We caught glimpses of Carmen on Saturday but
he wasn't on stage and he wasn't
in the autograph room when we happened to be in there. We passed him in the
hallways a few times and said "hi." He was at the banquet but at a
different table and we never really got a chance to speak to him there.
So, during dinner, we had a chance to talk
to Gary Jones in-depth and although we talked about many things other than
Stargate, I did ask him a few questions. Spoilers ahead! I asked him how they
were going to deal with Amanda's absence from the show. He said that she is off
on some other mission. He said that Mitchel (Ben Browder) comes to the SGC and
thinks that he is coming there to join SG-1. He doesn't know that
he is going to lead SG-1. Beau Bridge's character greets him and hands
him a stack of papers and says "Now go pick your team." Mitchell is
shocked and going "huh?" He's told that he is in charge of SG-1 and
has to pick a new team. He wants to know where Col. Carter is and he/we find
out she is off on some other project/mission (Gary kept using the word
"mission" -- but I don't know any more details). So he asks about
each one and is told they are off doing something else now. I presume this is
when we find out Jack has been promoted to head of Homeworld Security. Daniel is
off doing something else. Teal'c is off doing something else. And Gary said the
first few episodes are about the team coming back together as SG-1, basically.
He said that several times -- that they are all scattered and it is about them
coming back together. So, basically, it sounds like SG-1 is
"re-formed."
I told Gary that I thought it sounded like
they were doing a spin-off of SG-1 while still calling it SG-1. Gary looked
uncomfortable when I said that and wouldn't really respond to my comment. This gave
me the impression (rightly or wrongly) that perhaps the cast has been cautioned
not to call S9 a spin-off in any way, shape or form. We also
talked a little bit about Richard Dean Anderson wanting to leave and I said
that I would miss him but if he wanted to go, they should let him go at this
point. I said I was getting more excited about S9, the more I hear about it.
Gary agreed but also said some lovely things about RDA and about how grateful
they all are to the years he gave the show and the way he brought in a large
fan base and helped the show grow so that now it can stand on its own. I always
have the feeling from all the actors that everyone who works there is very fond
of RDA.
Something I bet most of you don't know: Gary
Jones is a huge fan of American Idol. Nikko is his
favorite this year but he loves Nadia, too. We spent a good portion of dinner
on Saturday babbling about American Idol once we realized that we
had a common interest in it.
Gary is appearing in the first episodes of
the season. They began filming on February 28th and have just finished with the
first two.
While we were talking about reality shows,
Gary and Leah and I also discovered a somewhat “amazing” coincidence. No,
really. I mentioned that we were big fans of The Amazing Race.
Gary said he’d never really watched the American version of the show. But his
wife works for a company in Vancouver that puts on annual charity events. This
company sponsored a version of The Amazing Race right there in
Vancouver that was run for charity and Gary participated in it was one of the
teams with his wife. Leah and I stared at him, our jaws hanging. I said, “Uhm,
we saw you.” He stared back and said, “No, you didn’t.” “Yes, we did,” I
insisted. “It was never televised,” he said. “I know,” I said. “We were there.
In Vancouver. We saw you running around in the street!” Now his jaw dropped.
Leah added, “You were in Chinatown.” We all began babbling at each other. It
turned out that Leah and I had seen Gary and his wife and the other teams
running up and down the streets of Vancouver for this special charity Amazing
Race! I even have a photo of one of the teams somewhere. At the time, Leah and
I didn’t know what the heck was going on. The people were wearing little vests
that said “Amazing Race” on them and since we are fans of the show, they caught
our eye. Gary ended up telling us a whole slew of hilarious stories about his
experiences in the race. Apparently he had no reservations about approaching
drivers and asking them to drive them places and so on and they ended up on
some truly madcap adventures. You know, we had wondered about those people with
the “Amazing Race” vests ever since we saw them. Now our questions are finally
answered and by a most unlikely source!
Joe Motes, who runs Vulkon, was sitting at
our table. He got up and suddenly disappeared during dinner. He came back in
some time later to usher Michael Shanks through the doorway with a flourish and
an announcement. Michael was wearing a t-shirt, jeans, hat and leather bomber
jacket and asked if he was “overdressed.” Joe sat back down and apologized for
having to leave us for awhile. Michael came over and immediately gave Gary
Jones noogies on his mostly bald head! Afterwards, he did go through the buffet
line (he was lucky he got there while there was still some food left!) and then
he sat down for Julie Caitlin Brown’s after dinner concert.
Below are a few photos of a jet-lagged,
sleepy Michael (you can see that throughout the banquet and Julie Caitlin
Brown’s concert, he was struggling to stay awake!). But he was incredibly
gracious and friendly to all the fans. He even stayed after the concert for a
little bit and let people take photos and schmooze with him, even though it was
obvious his eyes were barely propped open! From where I was standing after the
banquet, up against the stage, to take photos for a few people, I had a few
moments to actually speak to Julie Caitlin Brown. I complimented her on the
after dinner singing she had done for us and she thanked me. We were both looking
at Michael posing for photos and she said "Poor Michael, he's absolutely
exhausted, although he did say he managed to sleep a little bit
on the plane." It was pretty obvious Michael was tired. From our
perspective, he spent most of his time during the concert with his head propped
up on one hand, his hat pulled down and I think he really was falling asleep.
One guy came out of the room and was beside himself, saying "I've just met
Michael Shanks. My life is complete." He wasn't being sarcastic ... he was
genuinely excited and overcome.
The last two photos in the sequence below
are of the Sunday morning Our Stargate breakfast gathering. We managed to get a
few people out of bed early enough to have a breakfast right before Michael
Shanks’ photo ops, although some forum members still didn’t manage to make it
early enough! Afterwards, it was only a short walk across the hallway to line
up for the photo ops. It was a good thing we got in line early, too, because
the line was shortly snaking around the lobby and down the hall and way out of
sight. Luckily, Vulkon is very efficient and the photo ops went off without a
hitch.

John Noble, Greg Evigan &
Julie Caitlin Brown
John Noble (he played Denethor, the father of
Faramir and Boromir) from the Lord of the Rings movies was one of
the bonus guests. We were lucky enough to see him briefly in the autograph room
and to get his autograph on a set of Lord of the Rings Valentines
that I have (that even feature his character). He’d never seen the Valentines
before and was intrigued by them. I managed to get a few photos of him, but
only caught the last few moments of his panel, alas.
Greg Evigan was another one of the bonus
guests. He looks great and when someone asked him how he still managed to look
so good after so many years in the business he very bluntly said “I had a
facelift!” He talked a lot about working on TekWar with William
Shatner. Unfortunately, it’s a show I’ve never watched, so I wasn’t familiar
with some of the references, but he’s a very personable fellow. He serenaded
the audience upon request, as well.
Julie Caitlin Brown also came on stage on
Sunday but she wasn’t alone – her son was with her! I believe his name is Alex.
She said that they had unfortunately been unable to leave him with the person
who usually takes care of him. He seemed fixated on the microphone(s) most of
the time. Part of the time he was hamming it up and the other part he seemed
shy of the crowd. But he stayed on the stage!
