Michael Shanks
joined by Teryl
Rothery, Ronny Cox and Lexa Doig

It’s too bad the photographer didn’t make certain I had my eyes open! Oh
well, Michael’s the one who counts!
Michael and Lexa arrived at the convention
first thing in the morning on Sunday but their talks weren’t scheduled until
later in the day. Instead, they had their photo sessions first. Michael had an
absolutely huge line of people, many of them seeing him for the very first
time. While the photo session continued, the photographers allowed everyone
else to stand off to one side and watch and take our own photos, as long as we
didn’t use our flashes. So, here are some of those photos. Obviously, some of
them aren’t as sharp as they should be since I had to shoot with available
light and no flash. Still, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture a few
unusual and somewhat candid shots, especially when Lexa and Teryl suddenly came
out from behind a curtain and joined Michael in clowning around and for some
photos!
After the photo sessions, they set up and
signed autographs and I managed to snap a few quick photos from across the room
of both Lexa (on the first page of this site) and Michael (below).

Here are some notes that I remember from
Michael’s talk at TulsaTrek. Partway through his talk, Lexa and Teryl Rothery
came out and joined him and then Ronny Cox also came on stage with him, as
well.
Michael was asked how old Daniel is supposed
to be. He said that he knew according to the movie "canon," Daniel
would be around 39 or 38. But that he always thought Daniel was more his own
age (33 now) and that that was the way *he* played the character.
Someone actually got up and asked Michael
Shanks when Jack and Sam were going to get together. Now why they wasted
everyone else's time with Michael Shanks on a question that has to do with two
characters he doesn't play, I don't know. Personally, I think it's rude the
same way I found the constant questions about Jack and Sam and AT and RDA
during the Shanks and Judge tour rude last winter.
In any case ... Michael seemed puzzled by
the question, honestly. He said that Sam has a boyfriend now (Pete) and that he
didn't think there were any plans to take Sam and Jack any further. He also
pointed out it was against the regulations so what did the questioner expect?
She said something like "They could have an affair or something." At
which point Michael looked rather ... shocked.
Well, Michael went on to answer their
question by saying "The answer to your question is 'no.' ", if I'm
remembering correctly!
Someone yelled out that Michael should show
us his appendix scar. This was after he was doing a funny shtick about how the writers
were trying to decide how to write him out of the last episode of Season 3 when
his appendix burst. He said they were coming up with all kinds of wild
scenarios for what had happened to Daniel when Rob Cooper just said "Why
don't we have it that he had his appendix out?" Oh.
Anyway, Michael turned to Lexa when they
yelled out he should show his scar and she said "Go ahead." He said
"I don't want to." She said, "No, really. It's okay." He
said, "I don't want to." She said, "But it's fine. Go ahead and
show them." He insisted, "But I DON'T WANT TO." It was pretty
funny. She kept urging him to do it and he got more and more frustrated telling
her he didn't want to do it. Teryl jumped in and started going on about how
she'd actually seen his scar and touched it because as a good actor she'd
actually *used* his real scar when she'd been examining Daniel in the Season 4
opener. Lexa got onto Michael about that.
There was one guy there who got in line
twice to ask rather "unkind" questions. The first time he asked if
Michael Shanks was so well known for being able to play his emotions through a
range of facial expressions why did he just look constipated for the duration
of “Absolute Power”? Iit was an absolute *hoot* when he asked this, even though
he obviously thought he’d just put one over on Michael. Michael looked at him
like "HUH?" and I'm sure most of the audience was thinking the same
thing. This man just asked Michael why he looked *constipated*?! Lexa Doig
immediately jumped in before Michael could even answer and said "As
someone who lives with him, I can attest that is a problem he DOES NOT
HAVE." And Teryl immediately followed up with, "And as his doctor, I
can confirm that." And it went downhill from there. The second time, the
man asked if Michael Shanks was supposed to be so great at ad-libbing with RDA
why didn't they come up with something better than the appendix scar line at
the end of “Nemesis”? The questioner was grinning like mad each time he stepped
away from the mic.
DJ went up to ask a question and commented
there were a lot of spoilers out about S8 and they mostly seemed to be about
*Sam*. She also said there were a few about Teal'c, which was nice, but was
Daniel even *in* S8? *blink blink*
Michael looked at her with what can only be
described as fond exasperation and said "Yes, Daniel is in Season 8. In
fact, I just got done filming 'Prometheus Unbound' with Claudia Black playing
the part of Vala and it is *all* about Daniel." He also commented that Don
S. Davis was returning as Hammond in that episode. DJ asked him if Vala was a
"love interest" for Daniel. He pondered on it and DJ said "Say
no, Michael." He didn't really say yes or no because there was some joking
going on in the background with Teryl and Lexa but he did start making jokes
about how Vala survived, unlike all of his previous love interests.
Someone asked Michael why he left the show.
He said "Because I hated the show and everyone on it." He said this
while Teryl and Lexa were sitting on the stage behind him and Teryl puffed
right up. Michael said "I know what she's doing over there." And then
he said, "And the only reason I came back was because of Teryl and Janet
Fraiser ..." And as Teryl got all happy looking, he continued, "So I
could get her character killed off!" It was an absolute hoot. The three of
them were a riot together.
Michael was asked if there was going to be a
9th season of SG-1. He said that it wasn't out of the question but he thought
that everyone concerned was waiting now to see how Atlantis performed and what
the ratings were like, etc.
I know I've heard rumors there might be
another season and I've mentioned them in other threads when I've urged people
to send cards and letters for Season 8 and beyond. I asked Tony Amendola in
Jacksonville what he'd heard about a Season 9 and he didn't even blink. He just
said "I've heard nothing *official*."

Michael was asked when/if Lexa would be
appearing on Stargate. This was during Michael's talk when Lexa and Teryl and Ronny
had all come out on stage with Michael near the end of his talk. Lexa made some
laughing comment that no one could hear really well and then fell about
laughing. Michael explained that she had said she thought the writers were
"over" writing parts for his ex-girlfriends/lovers/wives because the
lady who had played Sha're, Vaitare Banderas, was also the mother of his first
child. He was giving Lexa a playful "drop dead" look while she
continued to fall about laughing at him.
Michael was so hilarious with Lexa and Teryl
and then Ronny that the man seated next to me turned to me and said "They
should have recorded this. This is absolutely hysterical. It's priceless."
We were all laughing so hard we were crying. Afterwards, when they'd all left
the stage, I turned to him and the ladies next to him and they were all begging
me to give them the address of my website for my photos. I had some of my
photos from previous cons with me in my tote bag and I shared those with them.
Then I gave them some of the postcards we'd brought from the http://ourstargate.com/postcards/
page and asked if they'd like to send them in? They not only wanted to send
them in, they asked for more copies for their friends and relatives to send!
The fellow next to me told me I was a "treasure"! Who knew? Sam
Carter watch out!
When Ronny Cox snuck out on stage and was
lurking around behind Michael and Michael didn't know he was there, the
audience kept snickering. Finally, someone said (on the mike) "Could you
do something about that man in the black vest because he's *really*
annoying!" Michael turned around and burst out laughing. Ronny put on his
best Kinsey sneer and said "Everything he says is a load of *crap*!"
