Well, we were in the second row but way off
to one side. And the lighting on the stage absolutely sucked. No real stage
lights or spotlights. So it’s taken me quite a while to work up these photos
and my flash, as good as it is, couldn’t possibly reach most of the time, not
to mention the fact that with the digital camera it doesn’t tend to meter the
light levels correctly. Sigh. We paid through the nose for the most expensive
seats but really we would have been better off to be back a few more rows but
more in the center! Plus I had the added “treat” of sitting two seats away from
someone who was completely out of their mind … It’s a wonder our trip to
TulsaTrek didn’t end up on an episode of “Cops.”
First, we had fun just getting to the
convention. We were driving down the interstate. minding our own business and
suddenly Maryann said “Oh #$%^!!!!!” and started swerving all over the road.
Luckily, the highway was empty and we were in the middle of nowhere and she
pulled to the shoulder going 70 mph. Before I could so much as squeak, this
white van went WHOOSHING past us totally *surrounded* by cop cars all flashing
their lights. There were six of them chasing him. They must have been doing at
least 100 mph. A few minutes later, another state trooper came barreling up
behind us and chasing after the pack. Then a few miles down the road we passed
from Arkansas into Oklahoma and an OK trooper streamed past us, lights blazing.
Suddenly we came around a turn and there were about a *dozen* cop cars blocking
the highway and just all over the place. The white van was in the middle of the
median. It was empty and cops were swarming all over with flashlights. It
looked like whoever they were chasing must have jumped out and ran into the
woods.
Then at the convention, I had another
encounter with the police. This time because I tapped a lady on her arm to get
her attention (she was sitting near me ... it's a long story) and she literally
turned towards me, began *screaming* "DON'T YOU TOUCH ME! DON'T YOU DARE
TOUCH ME!" and then jumped to her feet and ran off. The next thing I knew,
the convention security -- which were police -- were coming to ask me what had
happened. Luckily, the policeman I spoke to was perfectly polite and calm and
simply told me "Maybe you shouldn't be touching anyone else and if you see
that lady again, just look the other way." Presumably he told her the same
thing which was not what she was after -- I'm sure she wanted me thrown out.
She spent all weekend sulking and sitting there turned away from us. But at
every other event and when we were out and about, I'd swear she was stalking
me. Every time I turned around, she was somewhere in the vicinity and sometimes
right behind me. I think she was trying to provoke me so she could scream
again. Uh, crazy much? LOLOL. Long story. Trust me, Michael Shanks had his arm
around me and I did not refrain from touching him, but since he touched me
first, I think I had his permission. The policeman who “interrogated” me was
even present. <g>
Teryl Rothery (Dr. Janet Fraiser)
Teryl Rothery was the hit of TulsaTrek,
winning friends everywhere she went, running out into the audience and the
bleachers on Sunday (see some of the pictures below), attending the charity
barbecue dinner and dancing and posing for photos, and staying late to attend
Ronny Cox’s concert (and play emcee for him). I don’t’ think there was an
attendee there who didn’t fall in love with her and on Sunday there were many
who said they’d never watched Stargate before but after meeting her, they were
sure going to start watching! Perhaps Teryl should be named the Stargate
Ambassador! She was a bundle of energy in her panels. When asked if she would
be returning to the show in spite of Dr. Fraiser’s tragic death in Season 7,
she said that she would love to come back at any time. But she had asked the
producers if she could please come back wearing a tight outfit, with big boobs
and perhaps evil? LOL. She did mention, numerous times, that although she loved
and missed all of the cast and crew of Stargate and she missed Janet very much,
at least Janet was with Daniel when she died. She felt that was somehow fitting
since Janet had been with Daniel at the end of Season 5 when he was dying and
he ascended.

Teryl was asked what charities she supports and
she mentioned that one of the charities all the cast of Stargate likes to
support is the Make a Wish Foundation.
Teryl did notice that I was attending the
convention sans Leah. When I explained that Maryann was "standing in for
Leah," Teryl raised her eyebrows and quipped "And Leah's all right
with this?"
There are even more photos of Teryl Rothery
than those here on page 2 of this website. She joined in the end part of
Michael Shanks’ panel (along with Lexa Doig and Ronny Cox) and she also came
out for a little bit during Michael Shanks’ photo session, so I snapped photos
of her then. I’ve included those groups photos on page 2, along
with the Michael Shanks panel photos and report.

A Multitude of Guests
I didn’t really take notes during all of the
other guests talks. There were so many guests at TulsaTrek! But here are a few
little anecdotes that I can remember.
We attended quite a few of the talks – some
of them for just portions. I was so pleasantly surprised by Brent Spiner, I
have to say. I’d been told he was rude and a prima donna and all sorts of
things. He was just an absolute hoot on stage. He’s obviously a frustrated
comedian and loved making the crowd laugh. He told the funniest story about how
he’s always getting recognized. He said someone came up to him in an airport
once and was so excited to meet him. And then they said “I’m just not used to
seeing you with hair.” Which, of course, puzzled Brent. Finally, the man said
“You are Patrick Stewart, aren’t you?” Brent immediately puffed himself up and
did a Patrick Stewart impression, saying “Of course I am, young man! But today
I am pretending to be Brent Spiner!”
Alas, we missed Penny Johnson Jerald’s talk,
but I did get a chance to speak with her briefly during the autographs and she
was very sweet. At the charity dinner, she came around to all the tables and
talked to people because she had to leave early. I thought that was really nice
of her. She was one of the few guests who took the time to even do that.
We attended a special three man show with
the Villains of Star Trek and that was awesome. It turned out to be all sorts
of little scenes from Shakespeare that they performed.
Katee Sackhoff is very young and cute. She
was so excited to have the role of Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica. She said
where she grew up they had very limited tv reception and she’d grown up a big
SciFi fan, watching Star Trek. She’d never seen the original Battlestar
Galactica, however, and didn’t realize the original Starback was male. When she
got the part, she rented a copy of the DVD and was watching it and kept looking
and looking for “her” character and couldn’t find it. She said she told her
friend who was watching with her that Starbuck *had* to be there because people
were talking about “her.” Then they suddenly realized that “holy #@%^” Starbuck
was a guy! I had a cartoon that Leah had drawn of the two Starbucks for her to
sign during the autographs and she was stunned when she saw it. I doubt she’d
seen herself cartooned before. J
Ray Park and Sala Baker told some funny
stories about being “recognized” as actors now and I think it was Ray Park who
said that he once thought he was being followed by some men who were going to
mug him. He actually jumped out at them, meaning to protect himself and they
were startled, protesting “Hey, man! We just want your autograph!” He said he’s
still friendly with those guys now. LOL.

I was paying for my breakfast Sunday morning
and it was $6.00 and change. I didn't want more change in my purse so I thought
I had some in my pocket and was digging for it. Daniel Logan, who played young
Boba Fett in Star Wars was standing next to me on the house phone. He thought I
didn't have the money to pay for my breakfast apparently and he handed the
cashier $5.00 to pay for my meal! How sweet of him. It took me a while to
convince him I really *did* have the money to pay.
As for Mercedes McNab, who played Harmony on
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, I have a little con story about her, too.
She was in Jacksonville at Dreamcon the week before TulsaTrek. I didn't attend
any of her panels or get her autograph or even speak to her -- not because I
don't like her or don't have any interest in Angel but because I've seen her at
numerous convention appearances over the last year and I have multiple copies
of her autograph now. She was in the dealer's room where I was sitting
interviewing Tony Amendola, however, and also where I spent quite a bit of time
with author P.N. Elrod. Well, at TulsaTrek, an autograph from Mercedes was
included with our gold tickets so when we went to her table, she looked at me
and Maryann and said "Hello! Weren't you just in Jacksonville last
weekend?!" We were so stunned she recognized us since neither one of us
had really had any interaction with her. We ended up having a nice little
conversation with her and for the rest of the con she kept waving at us and
saying hello every time she saw us.

Ronny Cox (Senator Kinsey) & Band
Ronny Cox talked about getting his first big
job in a movie on Deliverance. He had been doing stage work prior to that. He
said that the producers wanted to cast all unknowns so that the audience
wouldn't know who was going to live or die. In the end, they cast Ronny and Ned
Beatty as the unknowns but they got Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight as the other
two leads and they *were* well known by then. So it was a compromise. He said
that he and Ned Beatty were cast completely independent of each other but they
were already great friends and had been working in a stage production together
for months unbeknownst to the producers. To this day they remain great friends
and their lives have paralleled closely with their children being born close
together, etc. He told a story about how he had polio as a child and when he
was younger he could contort his arms out of their sockets. He said they wanted
to do something really gruesome to kill his character in Deliverance but he
suggested he contort himself instead and he demonstrated. So that is why his
character is found with his arm twisted over his head. To this day the make-up
artist from Deliverance is asked how he achieved that "special
effect" and he tells people it is a "trade secret."

There was a photo of Kinsey and Daniel at
the con (see below) and when I was getting it autographed, Ronny said he
absolutely loved it because he had so few scenes with Michael. He was always in
scenes with RDA as Jack. The photo was from an early episode because Daniel has
long hair and Kinsey has his finger wagging in Daniel's face. See below for a
glimpse of the photo!
He talked about how he always played good
guys early in his career and no one would cast him as a bad guy or found him
believable as a bad guy. And now it's just the opposite. He gets all the bad guy
roles and they think it's strange if he's cast as a good guy!
He said he absolutely adores working on
Stargate and he will do it no matter what. His agent wants to negotiate when
he's asked to return and he tells them to forget it. He will drop everything
and do whatever is asked of him to appear on the show. He just loves it and
loves working with everyone there. Kinsey is going to be *really* bad in Season
8.

He loved visiting with the fans and kept
inviting everyone to stop by and say hello and shake his hand, even if they
didn't want an autograph or to buy a CD. When I had my photo with him, he
wanted to have a little short chat with you after they snapped the picture.
Ronny Cox said that if you loved to hate
Kinsey before Season 8 ... just *wait* until you see what is coming up *this*
season. He would give absolutely no details. But he said/implied Kinsey is
*bad*. Bad bad bad bad. The big bad. (Check out the Big Bad Appreciation page
on Our Stargate!)

The Ronny Cox concert was great. His band
was awesome. There weren't a lot of people there, though. Even though it was
included with your gold ticket, a lot of people didn't show up. I suppose
because it was so late at night in the middle of town at the convention center.
Teryl played announcer for the concert. Ronny told funny stories in between
every song. Sadly, Travis Parker, their fiddle/guitar player, has since been
killed in a tragic shooting.
There are more photos of Ronny Cox on page 2
of this website. He joined in the end part of Michael Shanks’ panel (along with
Lexa Doig and Teryl Rothery). I’ve included those groups photos on page 2, along
with the Michael Shanks panel photos and report.

Lexa Doig
Lexa talked about her dad having multiple
sclerosis and how she and Michael therefore now support Multiple Sclerosis research.
Lexa said that their child is due in
September. They think it is a "girl or a boy without a penis." She
said that with all due respect to the "penally deprived" they hoped
it was a girl. (Of course, I’m so behind working on this website … the child
has now been born and it *was* a girl named Mia Tabitha Shanks. In fact, Our
Stargate has been taking donations for a special gift to the MS Society to
honor the birth – check out the Our
Stargate Charity Drive) She also said that Michael was very fond of simple
names and it was causing some disagreements because in *her* family everyone
has a really *long* name. Like twelve different names. She said that they have
long names and then a nickname that is *different* they are actually known by.
She gave some really hilarious examples.
