The Iron Artist’s Contest
|
|
|
|
A brief
explanation of the above – we came into the room for the Chris Judge and Tony
Amendola talk a bit early and found the Iron Artist’s Contest underway. What a
hoot! I’m sorry we missed the beginning. James C. Leary (Clem from Buffy the
Vampire Slayer – always a funny guy in his own right) and Peter David were the
MCs. The four judges were apparently picked from the audience I was later told.
The challengers were artists Bill Stout and Don Maitz. Peter David and James
Leary gave a running dialogue of gags punctuated with exhortations for the
crowd to yell “Banzai!” Leah took to sneaking up to the edge of the stage to
feed Peter David gags. He finally had enough of it and chased her clear to the
back of the room to make her tell the gag to the crowd herself. Later, when
Leah told me it was *Peter David*, I exclaimed that I loved his books. She
glared at me and said “He chased me!” I’m still laughing.

A Few Stargate Tidbits
An
explanation of the above items – The photo is a new one that Lightspeed
just started selling. You've all seen the promo shot. Well, Lightspeed now has
it for sale. Chris hadn't even seen it as a photo anywhere before I handed it
to him and he asked me where I got it. He sat there and studied it for awhile
and then said "Look how mad we all look. That's because it was our
lunch time." He was serious, too. I don't know if you'll be able
to read it on the photo (since it’s in black ink), but he wrote "Got
lunch?" on my picture!
I never
saw the comics for sale anywhere at Dragoncon proper, but at the Offworld
convention, you could get a special Stargate comic with a story in it that
focuses on Teal'c and Bra'tac called First Prime. The story takes place in 2nd
season right after Serpent's Lair. The comic was produced for the convention
and contains some preview pages for Prisoners of War #1, due out in January
2004 from Avatar Press. There were three different covers to choose from and
I’ve scanned them for you above. You can look up this company at http://www.avatarpress.com
. They actually had the first cover as a poster on the wall but, alas, not for
sale. I really like it. Of course, I had Tony and Chris sign the cover with Teal’c
and Bra’tac on the front. The artwork is really nice, I think. Chris hadn't
seen the comics before and kept stopping to read it, much to the
dismay of all of the people behind me waiting for autographs!
Another
funny little anecdote although, alas, the page is too large for me to scan. I
have a Stargate calendar and I’ve collected signatures of most of the major
actors on it. Michael Shanks had signed his page “Mr. December.” I showed it to
Chris. Big mistake. <g> Chris signed his page: “Mr. April is way better
looking than Mr. December.” I can’t wait to have Michael Shanks sign the Thor
page in Paris this November.
